Alligator Patchwork
Inspired by Ed Emberley's geometric animals, I set out to realize his alligator in fabric. Unfortunately, I underestimated the challenge of long triangles, but it was a great piece to experiment with different tricks and techniques, including wonky stars and flying geese.
Some things I don't want to forget:
- If I had made the tail and the body two blocks instead of one, I might have had more control over the tail.
- In order to make the mouth and tail go all the way to the end of the final block, the triangles need to significantly overlap the corner on the raw rectangle -- without going over, because then I'd have a square jaw.
- The wonky feet need to be more wonky, so that the resulting point is higher than 1/4" from the bottom of the block. I'm going to lose the point on one of them, which is just fine in this instance.
- The tiny pieces are tiny. When finished, the eyes will be 1/2" x 1". The feet should be just slightly taller. There are some really bulky seams back there!
- This pictured block is 14" x 3.5" or so. (What happened to my office ruler?)
I don't know what I'll do with it. Maybe a pillowcase for a 12x16" pillow? Framed in red-orange checks? Stay tuned!
